The second occasion that awful smell drifts in through your bathroom window or forces you to eat inside on a sunny afternoon when family and friends should be enjoying your back yard BBQ, is the time you realise that there is something rather smelly happening below ground.

Many Sydney residential and commercial sewer systems in buildings erected prior to the early 70’s were constructed with cast iron pipeing. A significant proportion of even more modern drainage systems are buried beneath the building’s concrete slab. Because they are hidden we often take our drains for granted, we never bother with any maintenance and eventually have to deal with unwelcome, messy and costly repairs.

Mates Rates Plumbing Services provide the prompt response you will need when a sewer disaster strikes. They can resolve all your stinking drainage issues, but even better, Mates Rates may be able to avoid them all together. Call (02) 9191 7369, or use the ‘Tap To Call‘ button or complete the enquiry form to receive a response within one working day to arrange an overdue drain inspection and report.

Drains don’t last forever, how old are yours?

The life-span of cast iron pipe is 25-30 years; so many deteriorating drains are now sharing the unwelcome signs of ageing. PVC pipes are prone to damage during building subsidence, and tree roots just love old terracotta pipes. Add building extensions, driveways, decks, landscaping, even carparks and swimming pools and the idea of having to dig it all up to replace aged pipes looks like an expensive and smelly plumbing nightmare.

One thing is however certain, one day, maybe very soon, you will smell that offensive sewer odour and something will need to be done immediately to make it go away!

Plumbers dislike these situations too, so the fact that they have developed alternatives to digging trenches across your property should really come as no surprise. The alternative is trenchless repair, a better long lasting solution that turns out to be far less costly too!

Trenchless (or no dig), repair is a method of repairing sewer and other underground drainage pipes that restores the structure of the existing pipe internally, rather than by messy and disruptive digging. Although this approach is relatively new to Australia, pipe relining has been popular in Europe and the United States for over 30 years.

A Trenchless Sewer (or Stormwater) Repair Can Fix It

The most common drain issues are caused by inevitable ageing, pipe deterioration and tree root damage. The most common sewer problems that can be corrected by a Mates Rates trenchless repair include:

  • Corrosion due to rust
  • Cracks in clay, lead, cast iron, & plastic pipes
  • Sewage blockages & backups
  • Pipe fractures
  • Minor pipe misalignment
  • Tree root intrusion

As Sydney’s trenchless sewer maintenance and repair specialists Mates Rates choose to use the Cured-In-Place Pipe (CIPP), relining technology that eliminates most of the disruption caused by digging trenches across your property. CIPP does not require excavation to rehabilitate a pipeline that is either leaking or structurally flawed. Mates Rates will usually install the CIPP liner through a pre-existing access point, although depending upon design considerations a small excavation may occasionally be required. Following a thorough SewerCam examination and determination that CIPP relining is the best preventative or remedial sewer solution, your report and quote is prepared.

Once agreed to your Mates Rate’s CIPP engineer will clear the pipe of any intrusions and blockages then insert a patented jointless and seamless resin impregnated flexible liner into the subject pipe without the necessity of digging a trench the length of the offending pipe.

CIPP is the highly efficient new way to handle sewer drain and stormwater pipe replacement, your Mates Rates CIPP repair experts are able to create a “pipe within the existing pipe,” with the same structural strength as a brand new replacement pipe.
In addition to providing a practical alternative to costly pipe replacement CIPP pipe relining repairs have many advantages over the traditional dig and replace method, including:

  1. Safeguarding floors, structures, paths, walls & driveways;
  2. Increased pipe flow efficiency;
  3. Elimination of costly restoration & reclamation repairs;
  4. Elimination of root intrusion;
  5. Much faster than dig & replace;
  6. No damage to tree roots or landscaping;
  7. Repairs pipes with multiple angles and bends;
  8. Lines damaged pipe area only, not entire system;

Trenchless Pipe Repair vs. Traditional Pipe Repair

Mates Rates no-dig sewer solutions are your less invasive option when fixing common sewer line issues. Traditional sewer repairs mandated extensive trench digging and excavation to remove and replace broken or cracked pipes. Trench excavation is an outdated and costly practice that unavoidably damaged or destroyed landscaping, driveways, and many other structures.

Mates Rates plumbers guarantee to provide you with an excellent sewer maintenance and repair service, exceptional workmanship and attention to detail. Your local Mates Rates plumber is highly trained fully experienced in CIPP installation and always reliable.

Advantages of Trenchless Sewer Repair

Often the traditional sewer repair approach is impractical due to business needs or regulations that prevent such destructive methods. Little to no digging is involved in this trenchless process, making CIPP a more cost-effective and less disruptive method than traditional “dig and replace” pipe repair methods. The advantages of Mates Rates trenchless sewer repair establish clear reasons to select the no-dig method, including:

  • Creating substantially less waste;
  • Majority of work occurs outside your building/home;
  • Access is far less intrusive;
  • Minimal disruption to sewer or water service;
  • Reduced on-site dirt & mess
  • Saves significant & unnecessary expense
  • Expensive landscape does not get destroyed;
  • 25 Year CIPP manufacturer’s parts warranty, plus
  • Longer lasting repair than alternatives.

CIPP sewer repair accomplishes everything that can be done traditionally without the need to dig up large areas and lengthy trenches. This cost-effective modern plumbing alternative can be undertaken beneath existing structures without disturbing them, or the threat of costly damage. Mates Rates also like the fact that there is less environmental impact than traditional sewer repairs, as CIPP even reuses pipe that is already in the ground as opposed to creating needless (smelly & hazardous), waste or excess fill that needs to be cleared from your site and legitimately disposed of.

SewerCam Inspection and CIPP Report

Prior to recommending the most appropriate method of sewer or stormwater repair a Mates Rates SewerCam inspection will identify and locate the root of your drainage pipe issue.

SewerCam is Mates Rates specialised CCTV camera, monitor and radio frequency (RF) locator that allows your sewer maintenance and repair specialist to see right down inside your sewer lines and underground stormwater plumbing to establish the cause and extent plus identify the exact location/s of any blockage, leak or fracture.

An inbuilt radio emitter assists your Mates Rates plumber to accurately detect the SewerCam’s location below ground to take note of the diameter of the pipe, any diameter changes and length of pipe, as well as the number of branch connections. The RF locator is a SewerCam feature that will save you thousands of dollars by reducing the time it used to take to locate drain damage, and determine if the pipes can be fixed with ICCP technology.

Your Mates Rates sewer maintenance and repair expert can show you the SewerCam’s video recording (even provide you with a copy if you wish), to help you understand the exact nature and location of your plumbing issue, plus describe how the trenchless repair will cost effectively fix the problem. Your Mates Rates inspection report will detail exactly what is wrong with your pipes and precisely where the issues exist, and include a quotation for completing the necessary repairs.

Pipe Relining - FAQs

What are the signs of a broken sewer pipe?

If your toilets/sinks are not getting rid of the water or backing up and water and waste are taken in by roots of trees and grass, it's a sign of a broken sewer pipe. All other signs include the smell of Sewer gas, slow drain, and spots of mold and mildew on walls or floors.

What causes sewer issues?

Everything that goes into our sink, shower, and tub drains, our toilets, and our garbage disposals will find its way to your sewer line. There are many reasons for broken sewer lines including improper sewer line installation, tree root infiltration, pipe damage and deterioration, and improper pipe settlement. If you are flushing debris or pouring grease down the drain it will cause you to damage the sewer pipe.

How often should I have my sewer line inspected?

Sewer inspections can give you a deep dive into the condition of your sewage system, and it’s great to be able to address any issues that arise before any big damage. If your sewer seems to be working fine, every 1-2 years inspection can keep the pipes clean of debris and free of leaks. Additionally, you must get your line checked out when moving into a new house.

Does the homeowner’s insurance cover sewer line damage?

Standard Homeowners insurance policies generally won't cover most types of damage to sewer lines or any other service lines. Some homeowners insurance companies may offer special endorsements for sewer lines but it will be added to your policy at an additional cost.

How is a Sewer line fixed?

Sewer pipe will be replaced with a new one at the appropriate size after the hole is dug. If you're looking for an affordable way to fix your sewer line issue, a trench option might be for you. Call Mates Rates Plumbing today if you want more information about trenchless pipe repair or replacing your damaged sewer line.

COST-SAVING REPAIRS, MAINTENANCE & UPGRADES
