GUIDED MAP AND COMPASS CLASS

GUIDED MAP AND COMPASS CLASS

Join us for a weekend of learning and skill building in the beautiful White Mountains! In an era dominated by digital navigation tools and apps, the art of using a map and compass remains an essential skill for any outdoor enthusiast. Our entry-level Map and Compass class is designed to take you back to the basics of navigation, emphasizing the importance of these timeless tools in ensuring safety and confidence in the wilderness.

Taught by experienced AMC Guides, this hands-on course is crafted for beginners and aims to instill a strong foundation in analog navigation techniques, offering a deep dive into reading topographic maps, understanding compass functions, and blending both skills to navigate through varied terrains confidently. Whether you're a hiker, backpacker, hunter, or simply an adventure lover, mastering these fundamental skills will enhance your outdoor experiences and prepare you for any situation where technology might fail.

Course Highlights: Understanding Topographic Maps: Learn to interpret map symbols, features, and contours to visualize the terrain and plan your route effectively.

Compass Basics: Get acquainted a compass and it's parts, learning how to use it alone to find directions and in tandem with a map to navigate.

Field Techniques: Practice hands-on navigation exercises in an outdoor setting, applying what you've learned to real-world scenarios.

Problem Solving: Develop strategies for when you get lost, including how to reorient yourself using a map, compass, natural features, landmarks, etc.

Safety First: Emphasize the importance of preparation, including how to plan your route, what to pack, and the role of digital tools as a backup, not a primary resource.

This course not only equips you with vital skills but also fosters a deeper connection with the natural world, encouraging mindful exploration and a greater appreciation for the environment.

Whether you're preparing for your first outdoor adventure or looking to strengthen your navigational skills, this course is an invaluable step towards becoming a more self-reliant and confident explorer.
